Are You Ready for a Cosmetic Procedure? What the New AHPRA Guidelines Mean for You

Are You Ready for a Cosmetic Procedure? What the New AHPRA Guidelines Mean for You

Deciding to have a cosmetic procedure is a really important and thoughtful choice- and it’s different for everyone. It can be exciting and life-changing, but it can also feel a bit overwhelming and uncertain. It’s not just about the physical change; it’s important to make sure you’re emotionally and mentally ready, too.

That’s why it’s essential that readiness for treatment goes beyond the standard consultation with a cosmetic provider. It involves understanding your motivations, emotional wellbeing, expectations, and your ability to cope with the outcomes- both expected and unexpected. A full, holistic picture of your health is now required. And that’s where we come in.

At OCD Clinic Brisbane, we offer independent psychological assessments that support both patients and cosmetic practitioners in delivering safe, ethical care in line with the updated 2025 AHPRA guidelines.

What Has Changed?

First, let’s talk about these changes.

From the 2nd of September 2025, the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) requires all registered health practitioners performing non-surgical cosmetic procedures to ensure their patients undergo a holistic, evidence-based psychological assessment before treatment proceeds. This follows on from the 2023 Medical Board of Australia guidelines, which introduced similar psychological screening requirements for surgical cosmetic procedures.

These requirements apply to:

  • Nurses and nurse practitioners
  • Dentists
  • Other registered health practitioners involved in non-surgical cosmetic procedures

The procedures covered include:

  • Botox and dermal fillers
  • Thread lifts and skin tightening
  • Fat-dissolving injections
  • Laser treatments and resurfacing
  • Cosmetic dental procedures, such as veneers

What Do the Guidelines Require?

According to AHPRA, “registered health practitioners have a responsibility to ensure an evidence-based, holistic assessment of the person is undertaken. The assessment should consider the person’s history, relevant psychological, social and cultural aspects, and, in particular, assess for any condition, including underlying psychological conditions such as Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD), which may make them an unsuitable candidate for the procedure.”

In practical terms, this means:

  • Psychological screening is now compulsory before many cosmetic treatments
  • If mental health concerns are indicated, you’ll be referred to a psychologist or another specialist before moving forward with the next steps
  • There’s a stronger focus on understanding your motivations and expectations
  • For anyone under 18, there’s a 7-day waiting period and a recommendation for an independent psychological assessment
  • Practitioners must be trained in these mental health checks (such as psychologists)
  • Advertising rules have gotten stricter to avoid misleading or pressuring people

These changes reflect a promising shift toward ethical, emotionally informed, patient-centred care

Why Psychological Screening Matters

Cosmetic procedures are not simply aesthetic, they can have emotional, psychological, and social impacts. Research shows that psychological conditions like Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) are significantly more common in those seeking cosmetic treatments, yet often go undiagnosed. Patients may not recognise their own risk factors or may be driven by social pressure, past trauma, or unrealistic expectations. Psychological screening is about protecting people, improving outcomes, and helping ensure that cosmetic decisions are made with clarity, confidence, and adequate support.

How OCD Clinic Brisbane Can Help

We offer specialised Cosmetic Preparedness Consultations to support patients and practitioners in meeting AHPRA’s requirements while promoting mental health and emotional wellbeing in cosmetic care.

What our process includes:

  1. Comprehensive Clinical Interview (50 minutes)

 A one-on-one session with a Psychologist, exploring:

  • Mental health history
  • Motivation for the procedure
  • Body image concerns
  • Coping skills and support systems
  • Expectations and understanding of risks
  1. Evidence-Based Psychometric Testing

Validated screening tools designed to assess for:

  • Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD)
  • Other relevant mental health conditions
  • General psychological readiness for cosmetic intervention
  1. Professional Reporting

A written report is delivered to the referring practitioner, the cosmetic provider, and the patient. It includes:

  • Clinical opinion on psychological suitability
  • Any concerns or contraindications
  • Recommendations for further psychological support, if needed
  • Guidance on post-procedure coping and resilience

Supporting You

These new AHPRA guidelines aren’t about blocking access to cosmetic treatments- they’re about making sure the choices you make are safe, supported, and informed from every angle. At OCD Clinic Brisbane, we believe that ethical cosmetic care begins with understanding the whole person- their mental health, their motivations, and their ability to navigate what can be a powerful and emotional journey.

Whether you’re considering a cosmetic procedure yourself, or you’re a practitioner looking to support your clients, we’re here to help you move forward safely, ethically, and confidently.
